7 tips for a healthy hotel stay

Whether you view a hotel as a retreat and refuge, a home away from home, or merely a place to rest when you’re traveling for business, one thing is certain—you want it to be comfortable and clean. 

Frequent business travelers are already more likely to fall ill to airborne viruses. Many have, at some point, contracted the common cold or the flu following air travel. Dealing with weight gain, insomnia and a compromised sense of overall well-being, many business travelers cite work demands on the road as contributing to poor health. 

Happiness also plays a significant role in healthiness. Keep these tips in mind when planning for your next trip and let your Travel Manager know what your preferences are so we can take care of it for you. 

1. Find the perfect location.

Your hotel’s location can impact the enjoyment of your trip, comfort and ultimately your health. For example, staying next to a Whole Foods allows you to grab some healthy food when you land so you don’t give in to the temptation of a midnight burger on the all-night room service menu. Or choose a hotel close to the waterfront so it will encourage you to squeeze in that morning run before you hit the office.

2. Make use of fitness facilities

A great way to stay active on the road is fitting in a quick work out at the hotel gym or swimming pool. If you’re interested, we’ll highlight the hotels that have a gym or fitness center. If your hotel lacks an on-site fitness facility, many hotels have privileges at neighboring gyms for their guests. If you don’t see a gym or exercise room listed on the hotel’s website, our team can call the hotel and ask about access to nearby facilities. Just take a pass on the hot tub, which can be a breeding ground for bacteria. Saunas are your best bet for rest and relaxation!

3. Get good in bed

Many chains and boutique hotels will list what types of mattresses they have and even the linen thread-count, on their websites. If you see this information, chances are the bedding is of good quality. If not, you can always inquire what type of mattress and bedding the hotel provides. Good sleep is integral to good health, so ensure your criteria are being met in terms of a decent bed when you’re on the road.

4. Breathe easy with allergy-friendly rooms

With so many allergens affecting our daily lives, hotels were bound to start offering allergy-friendly rooms. Although it’s not a standard feature of all hotels (yet), these hypoallergenic rooms typically have wooden floors (as opposed to carpets), microfiber pillows and duvets, sanitized vents, in-room air purification systems and of course, are smoke and pet-free. Generally speaking, the older a hotel is, the more likely it has allergens and microbes, so keep that in mind when searching for a place to stay.

5. Block out light with blackout curtains

Regardless of price point, most hotels offer blackout curtains that even vampires will find useful by blocking out all the light from the outside. The complete lack of light pollution helps ensure a good night’s sleep, especially if you’re traversing time zones and need to catch a few Z’s during daylight hours.

6. MacGyver a humidifier

Hotel rooms are notoriously dry, affecting our nasal passages, throats and the largest organ of our body: our skin. If you find the air unbearably arid, fill your in-room kettle with water and leave it to boil, letting the steam evaporate and moisten the air. Make sure not to leave it unattended, though!

7. Stay connected with Wi-Fi
