Airlines introduce additional screening in USA

In July 2017 the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) announced the introduction of enhanced security screening for people travelling to the United States.

Since then, the following changes have been introduced:Enhancement of overall passenger screening;

  • Increased security protocols around aircraft and in passenger areas;
  • Deployment of advanced technology, expanding canine screening, and establishing additional pre-clearance locations; and
  • Heightened screening of personal electronic devices

Update as of 26 October - Airlines introduce additional screening

Effective 26 October, five airlines announced the immediate introduction of additional screening of customers traveling on their services into the USA. This screening may involve the completion of an additional departure card and/or a brief security 'interview' with security staff.

Which airlines are affected?

Any airline that flies into the United States. At present, the following five airlines have introduced additional security on their U.S. flights:

  • Air France (AF)
  • Cathay Pacific (CX)
  • Egypt Air (MS)
  • Emirates (EK)
  • Lufthansa (LH)

What travellers need to know

Travelers should arrive at the airport at least three hours prior to their flight, to ensure they have enough time to check in and clear all security checks prior to boarding.
Travelers should be aware of any restrictions regarding the carriage of electronic items.
Travelers who intend to carry personal electronics on board the aircraft should ensure that they are able to power up their devices if required at the security check.
Some items may be required to be removed from their protective cases or outer packaging.
