Busy summer travel season is approaching and as millions flock to airports nationwide, now’s the time to shorten your wait by enrolling in TSA Precheck
The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is encouraging travelers to sign up for TSA Precheck, the agency’s trusted traveler program that allows for expedited security screening.
Travelers hoping to quickly get past security this summer can sign up for a TSA Precheck, granting travelers with a five-year membership for a mere $85 fee per person. In other words, only $17 a year, for hours saved waiting on airport lines and more time to actually enjoy your trip. For instance, over Memorial Day weekend wait times in TSA Precheck lanes averaged less than 5 minutes.
While Global Entry is valid regardless of which airline you’re flying, TSA Pre-Check requires flying certain airlines which are enrolled in the program. Up until now, only 12 airlines have participated in TSA Pre-Check. However, as of May 2016, four more airlines are participating in TSA Pre-Check: Aeromexico, Cape Air, Etihad Airways and Seaborne Airlines.
The program uses risk based security to identify low risk travelers allowing for an improved and more efficient security screening. By pre-screening to establish known travelers, TSA is able to focus its resources on travelers TSA knows less about thus strengthening aviation security.
The initiative was designed for domestic travel, allowing expedited security screening for members at participating U.S. airports. Traveler program members do not need to remove shoes, laptops, liquids, belts or any light outerwear when passing through TSA Precheck expedited lanes. In addition, children under 12 are able to pass through these expedited lanes with their parents and guardians.
TSA currently partners with 16 participating airlines to provide expedited security screenings by placing low-risk designation in the barcode of passenger’s boarding passes. Dedicated TSA Precheck lanes are located in over 180 airports nationwide for all eligible travelers. Program membership is open to U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals and lawful permanent residents. Approved applicants receive a Known Traveler Number (KTN) via mail or online that can be added when booking flights. Members of other Department of Homeland Security Trusted Traveler Programs are also eligible to receive expedited screening.
If you are a member of the following programs, you are already eligible for TSA Precheck and do not need to apply:
- Members of U.S. Customs and Border Protection's Global Entry, SENTRI and NEXUS programs. These travelers can use the CBP PASSID as their KTN.
- U.S. active duty military, National Guard and reserve members.
- DoD civilian employees and certain other federal government employees, such as those with certain security clearances.
